Whether photographing the ever-changing surfaces of the river Thames, the geo-thermal pools that bring Iceland's volcanic interior to the surface, or a single egg in a nest, Horn's photographs function somewhere between empirical record and drawing. For her, the camera is more than simply a means of transcribing the surface detail and texture of things. It also draws our attention to what is overlooked, creating a mental double-take of the visible world.
Since 1975, Roni Horn has been making frequent trips to Iceland where she finds inspiration and a solitude largely absent from a life in New York. Horn is best known for introducing the personal to minimalist sculpture. Her three-dimensional works take the form of poetic fragments culled from the likes of Wallace Stevens or Emily Dickinson, then embedded in obdurate blocks of machine-finished aluminium. In Iceland, she finds many of the same tensions that animate her fabricated sculpture.
