'Hades Hades Hades' is comprised of two screen prints on cotton which have been hand stitched onto a floral fabric background. Emin's signature has been signed on a small strip of silk ribbon which has also been hand stitched on the lower right corner. The repeated text Hades on the left hand screen print evokes the underworld in Greek mythology, a word which later became synonymous in Christianity with hell. For Emin Hades has a further, more personal meaning: it was the name of a night club in Margate, and a place where she experienced some of her best and darkest teenage experiences. The right hand print shows a sketchily drawn figure on her knees who appears to be holding a hammer in one hand.
Always at the centre of her own world, Tracey Emin uses all aspects of her life in her art, turning intimate autobiography into broader statements about sex, love, death, freedom and everyday life. Her work has taken the form of diaristic drawings, paintings, films, sculptures and written stories, all of which convey the same combination of frustration, pain, compassion and wit. Drawing and printmaking have remained key mediums for Emin, and over the last ten years she has produced a steady output of monotype prints direct from her drawings.
