Anthea Hamilton's work weaves together complex symbols and narratives through performance, installation, textiles and sculpture to create often surreal, site-specific and collaborative work. Hamilton draws on a multitude of references, from architecture and design history to fashion and popular culture, to create a sense of ambiguity and conversation within her work. The body is a recurring subject matter in Hamilton’s practice and here, with Cloudy Legs with Scrambled Sky (2022), she presents a silhouette of the her own legs suspended in a scrambled view of the sky, evoking notions of a contrived ideal that is both virtual and almost dreamlike.
This is a fundraising print with 100% of net proceeds being donated to Open School East, Margate.
Open School East, established in 2013, is a free, independent art school and community space that focuses on collective learning through the arts. They support cultural practitioners at an early stage to develop and sustain their practice, learn new and transferable skills, develop their confidence and shape their creative voice by becoming active learners and co-producers of OSE’s programmes.
Anthea Hamilton (born 1978, London) works with sculpture, painting, moving-image and performance using the iconography of popular culture and history to create her own form of contemporary pop art. She creates narrative environments through sculptural assemblage and collage. Her work in part is informed by the history of physical prowess and representations of the human, especially female, body. Anthea Hamilton was a shortlisted artist for the Turner Prize 2016.
