Psyche is a two-colour screen print on coloured, anodised aluminium. Originating from two overlaid drawings of the same nude young woman, we see Psyche's hair and arms suggestively entangled, while the delicate black outline of the figure emerges and submerges back into the cool reflective surface of the material. While Gary Hume has often painted directly onto aluminium, Psyche marks his first use of this material for an editioned work. As with his paintings, areas of the metal have been left bare, becoming both elements of the figure as well as the ground. The art work is designed to be mounted directly onto the wall and a simple hanging device is included.
Gary Hume combines a passion for painting and a mastery of colour with a hard, cool touch. Starting with found images of familiar subjects - Kate Moss, a blackbird, some flowers - Hume transforms them into bold, semi-figurative abstractions. Though striking and easily seductive, Hume's work retains an uneasy tension, with his decorative vision offset by the desire to show an awkward, edgy kind of beauty.
