For Counter Editions, Burton chose to produce the cover image from his forthcoming book 'Dreamland' (Powerhouse, November 2000). Standing in puddles of discarded underwear, twinned legs tower overhead. Rising above the tiled plinths of this sprinkler-fed Eden the unidentified figures stand like sexual collossi guarding the gates of a latter-day Rhodes. Here the LA that Burton chooses to identify becomes a seductive and comic image of modern ruin - where ancient gods have become the shooting stars of another recherché celebrity.
Taking us on a journey through the sunshine noir of greater Los Angeles, Jeff Burton's images document a trail from the Hollywood sign to the San Fernando valley, and there, the porn industry in which he works. His picnics of fragmented flesh are often found assembled in oblique repose, lounging around poolsides or drifting through the rococo vernacular of rooms for hire. In amongst the fountains and foliage are the pussies, pets and hairless cushions of human flesh that stud the artificial suburbia. A landscape photographer in the tradition of William Eggleston, Burton's detailed and saturated compositions belong equally to people they depict and the situations they describe.
