'Stephanie on Puppy, Connecticut 2000' is from a series of intimate portraits of the supermodel Stephanie Seymour shot over the last two-and-a-half years at Seymour's homes in Connecticut, New York, and Miami Beach. Here she is poised delicately atop Jeff Koons giant floral puppy. Sited in the pastoral surrounds of a gracious country home complete with white picket fence, the scene takes on a hyper-Disney quality, where luxury, fantasy and beauty are almost perfectly aligned. The only inconsistency in this image of perfection are the tyre tracks in the lawn. Left by a cherry-picker truck they mark the presence of a more mundane reality - that the puppy has its own beauty routine, albeit a daily manicure by the gardener.
Teller's deceptively casual aesthetic collages photographic genres, mixing portraits, fashion photographs and landscapes. Shots of aspiring models and supermodels join scenes of street life, interior of caves and family meals at home. Teller makes no distinction between images of his private life, and images of the fashionable and famous. What unifies the diversity of Teller's work is a need for identification with his subjects and a particular response to a contemporary world. As Teller says 'I can't make such a clear distinction. If I photograph someone, for whatever reason, I take part in that moment, in that situation, as intensively as if it were a private photo'.
