Anne Hardy’s enigmatic tableaux are constructed through a lengthy process of set-building using rubbish found outside the studio. Reflection suggests the corner of a faded institutional gym abandoned by its occupants— with no clue as to why, or where, or what the purpose of this space or its miscellaneous objects might be. In open-endedly presenting the familiar made strange, Hardy invites the viewer to create their own theatrical narratives. Hardy worked closely with Germany’s legendary photographic printer Volker Grieger to produce this energetic yet uncanny print.
In a practise spanning photography, sculptural installation, and audio, Anne Hardy is perhaps best known for her photographs of deserted interiors filled with intriguing objects. They are the result of a meticulous, time-intensive process of set-building: Hardy builds each set in her studio from scratch, using junk found outside her Hackney studio to suggest strange fictional narratives. Her vision ranges from the structure of the constructed space to the smallest of allusive details, which work together to suggest a host of surreal possible fictions. Revealing as much as they conceal, Hardy’s images invite the viewer to populate these mysterious spaces with their own narratives
