In keeping with these procedures Wool has chosen to remake a text painting from the early 80s at several removes. Photographed, xeroxed and then re-separated to become the basis of a screenprint, the original work, itself a painting without an image has become an image of a painting. The text reads as a statement of similar circularity: 'If you don't like it you can get the fuck out of my house', it states in black and white. If you can, the question - and specifically the question of painting - is probably no longer hanging in the air.
Fusing the traditions of Warhol and Pollock, Christopher Wool may be the quintessential American painter. Wool is both a gestural painter who uses mechanical means, and a reproductive painter who uses his own hand. In his paintings, process and facility are often confused: an expressive splatter of paint may turn out to be the product of a carefully applied template, while impassive blocks of stencilled are actually lettering of fine brushwork.
