About the Edition
Rebecca Warren makes expressionistic, figurative sculptures, typically in unfired clay that are then painted or left in their raw state. These works are often overtly sexual, and play out a wide range of historical references including Boccioni, Renoir, Degas, Robert Crumb and Mapplethorpe. Warren's position regarding her antecedents is a fluid one, moving from homage to caricature, from celebration to willful dissolution. 'An Intimate Scene' is a table-top statuette which devolves from the classical truncated nude to include half discarded underwear which has attracted the attention of a small dog, and a rosie-cheeked bottom evidencing recent participation in the English Vice.
About the Artist
Rebecca Warren's sculptures develop long-standing lines of sculptural enquiry into the history of art. It's an enquiry that can be traced back to its prehistoric magical inception, through ideals of representation of the human, to modern and postmodern reduction. In this process, inevitably, it takes in the work of canonical male artists such as Boccioni, Degas, Renoir, De Kooning, as well as cartoonist Robert Crumb. Warren's position regarding her antecedents is very much a fluid one, moving from homage to caricature, from celebration to willful dissolution.
